Food for the Panti
September 17, 2009

By: Erin Lewis
In the province of Nias, North Sumatra of the islands of Indonesia is the Pondok Rahmat Children’s Home. This home is known as the Panti Asuhan ("house of care"), and was set up in 2005 after the 8.7 earthquake that devastated Nias, leaving many children orphaned or without the economic means to continue their education.

Pastor Agus and his wife Liana run the Panti, which is home to between 25 and 50 children at any given time. They take responsibility for the well-being, education and spiritual needs of the children. Not only are the children being educated, fed and well cared for, they are also assisted in developing strong character traits and life skills that they will be able to bring back to their villages in the future.

LEAP (Local Empowerment Assistance Program) is a non-governmental development organization dedicated to assisting Indonesian village communities through poverty relief and small industry implementation. LEAP's mission is "to show love in action, to impart knowledge, and to empower others."

Founded in Australia by Channa and Ruby Senaratne in 2004, LEAP has assisted in numerous empowerment projects, which have gone from implementation to local management within a few years. In addition to running other programs on the islands such as a canoe factory, coconut oil refinery, and an educational kids club, LEAP is currently working with the Panti in assisting them to become food-secure.

In order to reduce the daily living costs and have more funds to spend on educational resources, LEAP is assisting the Children’s Home to set up a self-gardenening program, complete with education and supplies. Through setting up a permaculture system that incorporates food trees, an organic vegetable garden, an animal husbandry (pigs and chickens), biogas and aquaculture, LEAP will work with the Panti in reaching a self-sustaining and economically smart level of sustenance.

The garden, pigs and chickens are already underway but more funding is needed to purchase fruit trees, seeds, organic microbial compost, and more gardening tools such as spades and wheelbarrows. Proceeds from the sale of this shirt will help to purchase these items.

Holidays With Purpose
LEAP also has an arm that facilitates direct interaction between people like you and their projects: Holidays with Purpose. Holidays with Purpose organizes trips to these villages, where you can become a part of their aid efforts. One of their better-known trips is the surf charter, in which you can surf world-class break off the islands of Indonesia. Heart
